The story of the famous train robber, bank robber, and all-American hero, who “stole from the rich and gave to the poor”. He was shot by “that dirty little coward” Robert Ford. That much is for certain. Whether Jesse was quite the philanthropist that Woody Guthrie idealizes in this ballad is open to discussion, but certainly Jesse James qualifies at an American hero.
