This is a song, an American image that keeps coming around for me. The train. The railroad. The days of glory. The good old railroad songs. The Wabash Cannonball. The days of the good old America as it entered the 20th century and the age of miracles. Riding those rails. Singing them railroad songs. Whatever happened to the railroad?
“It’s a long steel rail and a short cross tie. I’m on my way back home.” from Streamline Cannonball and a couple of other songs)
Here’s one I’m stuck on. I call it the evening train blues or the eastbound train.

Perhaps not your cup of musical tea, though some lovely accompanying imagery . . .
Liked it. Any song that includes train whistles is all right by me.
Great photos of trains. Somehow, I want to sing that song by Johnny Cash. A lot of terriffic train songs.
Nice spsot …
Isadora
Thanks. There certainly are a lot of great american train songs.
with words, photos – and music you composed a fine tribute to the genre of railroad songs! Come on, sing as long as you are back to the Bronx where do you belong …
and:
I once made a CD compilation of train songs. It was a great CD. Hank Williams, James Brown, Elvis, Bill Monroe songs. It had Midnight Special of course. Streamline Cannonball, Rock Island Line. I have to go find that CD somewhere in the stacks. Thanks for your comments Frizz.
I love train songs, including the Wabash Cannonball. But my favorite is “The Wreck of the Old 97.”
Great post!
Thanks for stopping by. I posted the Wreck of the 97 too, on June 6. You’re right it’s a great song.
I’ll check that out.
It is beautiful to yearn and reflect on days gone by. Love that song…
How about “Mean Old Train” (that took my baby away). Papa Lightfoot.
That’s a pretty good railroad song. We’re definitely missing that part of our culture these days.
